Description:
Payne’s Grey (P.B 15 / P.Bk 6) is a cool, deep grey watercolour that blends Phthalo Blue (P.B 15) with Lamp Black (P.Bk 6) to create a versatile, atmospheric pigment. Known for its balanced neutral tone with a subtle bluish tint, Payne’s Grey is ideal for creating soft shadows, stormy skies, and moody landscapes. It offers an excellent alternative to black for darkening colours without overpowering them, adding depth and sophistication to both natural and abstract compositions.
This semi-transparent pigment provides smooth, even washes, ranging from a strong, deep blue-grey when applied at full strength, to soft, misty tones when diluted. Its bluish undertone gives it a cooler, more nuanced quality compared to neutral grey or pure black, making it perfect for rendering shadows, overcast skies, and nighttime scenes.
With excellent lightfastness, Payne’s Grey maintains its rich, cool tone over time. It mixes effortlessly with other colours, enhancing blues, greens, and earth tones to create a wide range of muted or shadowed hues. Whether used for subtle shading or dramatic contrast, Payne’s Grey (P.B 15 / P.Bk 6) is an essential pigment for any watercolourist, bringing depth, atmosphere, and cool sophistication to a wide range of artwork.
